Artistic approach

Paper is at the centre of Gaudette’s artistic practice. Using images and materials from everyday life, he works with the tensions resulting from the ambiguity of representation. He channels this into poetic and sometimes humorous gestures that raise questions about perception, complexity of history and the systems that create and reinforce the values that embody us.

These stagings emerge from a slow observation process mixing gestural drawing and optical illusion, and where the notion of time merges between subject, support and surface.

The artist sees his practice as a great laboratory that does not consider paper as a two-dimensional surface, but rather as a material that can become an integral part of his pictorial composition process.

About Sébastien Gaudette

Sébastien Gaudette is a Canadian artist living in Montreal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in visual and media arts from UQAM (2015). His work with paper is focused on creasing, but pushes the reflection towards the gesture of folding, on the properties of the material as well as on the challenges of the artist’s work in the current context.

Gaudette’s work has been selected for several solo exhibition projects in major Quebec institutions, including the Musée des beaux-arts de Mont-Saint-Hilaire, the Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent in Rivière-du-Loup, The Centre national d’exposition de Jonquière, the Cirque du Soleil de Montréal and several “Maisons de la culture” in Montreal. He has also participated in charity events, including the auction of the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides and soon, the auction of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.

Sébastien Gaudette has taken part in several artistic residencies, including Espace Cercle Carré, Zocalo print art centre and the Vermont Studio Center. This year, he will carry out a research residency at the Centre SAGAMIE in Alma.

On the international scene, he has been invited to exhibit at the Art Helix Gallery in Brooklyn in 2017, in addition to having presented his work at several international fairs, including Art on Paper in Miami, the Seattle Art Fair, Papier in Montréal and the Foire d’art contemporain in Saint-Lambert. Some of these works are now part of various private collections.

In 2014, Sébastien Gaudette founded the LAB/Dessin group, which explores all forms of drawing. This research laboratory explores the hybrid notions of drawing and the different forms of creating in a community.
